Welcome to The Food Medic
We are your home for evidence-based health, nutrition, and fitness, founded by Dr Hazel Wallace and backed by a team of qualified experts.
Our Story
The Food Medic began in 2012 in Dr Hazel Wallace's student kitchen at Cardiff University. A recent graduate of Medical Sciences and a first-year medical student, Hazel started the blog to bridge the gap between conventional medicine and the growing body of research in nutrition and lifestyle.
Her drive came from somewhere personal. Hazel lost her father to a stroke when she was 14. That loss shaped her path into medicine, and deepened her frustration when she got there. Nutrition and lifestyle barely featured in her medical training, despite the evidence linking both to the conditions she cared most about preventing.
So she started educating herself and sharing what she found.
And so The Food Medic was born.
What began as a WordPress blog has grown into a community of over one million followers across social media, a top-rated health podcast with six million downloads across nine seasons, three best-selling books, and a membership hub home to hundreds of expert-written articles, recipes, and on-demand webinars.
The team has grown too. But the founding principle has never changed: we do the research, so you don't have to.
About Dr Hazel Wallace
Dr Hazel Wallace is the founder of The Food Medic, a medical doctor, registered associate nutritionist and personal trainer.
She is the author of three books: The Food Medic (2017), The Food Medic for Life (2018), and The Female Factor (2022) — an examination of healthcare, diet, and wellbeing through a female lens, expanding the definition of women's health well beyond reproductive medicine.
Hazel hosts The Food Medic podcast, rated five stars on Apple Podcasts, currently in its ninth season with over six million downloads across 184 countries. She appears regularly on ITV's Lorraine and James Martin's Saturday Kitchen, and is a trusted consultant on workplace wellbeing. She sits on the Scientific Advisory Board for WHOOP, working to advance research and product innovation for holistic health outcomes.
She is one of Britain and Ireland's foremost health educators. A credible, evidence-grounded voice in a space that often lacks both.
Our Purpose
Health information is complicated. It is frequently contradictory, often driven by trends, and rarely backed by the level of rigour it deserves.
We exist to change that.
Every article, recipe, and resource on this platform is created or reviewed by a qualified expert — from registered dietitians and nutritionists to medical doctors and physiotherapists. Nothing goes up without a credible source behind it. Our goal is not to tell you what to do. It is to give you the evidence, clearly and accessibly, so you can make your own informed decisions.
Think of us as the knowledgeable friend who always cites her sources.
